On November 8, 2014, in pseudo ramada-courtrooms at Tucson’s Udall Park, more than 100 local children found forever families at the annual Adoption in the Park. Twelve of those kids were adopted by six Devereux Arizona foster families. This is the 14th year for the Tucson Adoption in the Park event.
The Adoption in the Park event celebrates November as National Adoption Awareness Month. The annual celebration includes lots of free food and activities for the families as well as a few happy tears, mountains of hugs and lots of smiling, happy faces. While the children play, the adults snap photos and share stories of the newest members of their families. The camaraderie that exists among all of them is palpable. They all understand the impact of the day’s events on the adopted child and their new parents and extended families.
Nine-year–old Adam was one of the 12 children adopted by a Devereux Arizona foster family, Cindy and Tony Boehme. After fostering him for less than a year, the family bonded. When Adam became available for adoption, the Boehme’s decided to become his forever family.
Cindy and Tony Boehme are very familiar with foster care and the importance of providing loving homes. Cindy’s sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Steve Boccardo, have fostered/adopted more than 60 children and encouraged Cindy and Tony to start fostering as well. In addition, the children’s grandmother, Marion, was in foster care as a child and was fortunate that she remained with one family throughout her childhood who provided her a loving home. Now she looks forward to being a babysitter for all of her foster and adopted grandchildren! This large extended clan exemplifies what it means to be a caring, nurturing and loving family.
To all the Devereux Arizona foster parents who have adopted children we say thank you and we celebrate the expansion of your families!
