On behalf of Devereux, I would like to congratulate Jeffrey and Kathryn Blohm for providing 34 years of foster care services to over 200 children through our Devereux Foster Care programs. Jeff and Kathy started their journey as foster parents when a teenager in their community needed a safe home. They acted as a support system to this teenager and were told if they wanted to continue to help her, they would need to become licensed foster parents.
The Blohms became licensed foster parents with Devereux in 1981 and continued to grow in our programs. Jeff and Kathy participated in emergency receiving foster care, developed into licensed therapeutic foster parents, and have provided respite services to countless numbers of children in our community.
Foster parents often struggle with showing a child how to trust, respect and care for themselves and others. Jeff and Kathy, with their big hearts, patience, knowledge, and ability to be flexible, make it look easy. They are truly outstanding foster parents.
I began working at Devereux as a Therapeutic Home Specialist in September of 2010. Jeff and Kathy were one of the first families I was assigned. I am thankful to have learned from them and gained a long-standing respect and admiration for all foster parents through the children that we have helped together. Jeff and Kathy have worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the past 34 years, to provide a nurturing, stable and supportive environment for some of the most vulnerable children in our community. The Blohms have always been a family that we have counted on especially when we are given short notice to provide respite, transportation, and emergency placements.
Jeff and Kathy have had many former foster children come back into their lives as adults to thank them for their help and perseverance through the tough times in their lives. Jeff and Kathy serve as natural supports to many children they have fostered. The couple continues to change lives.
Kathy shared that one of the most important characteristics of a foster parent is to look at every child individually and be flexible to the child’s specific needs to help make them successful.
The Blohms will be retiring from Therapeutic Foster Care this year and will continue to open their home, share their skills, and provide support to children in our community based respite program.
The Blohms have been licensed with Devereux from the start of Devereux’s foster care programs and have helped shape our respectable reputation in the community.
Again, on behalf of Devereux, I’d like to say thank you to Jeff and Kathy for all that you do for our children and families. You have made an impact in the lives of so many. Thank you for your commitment to Devereux and the knowledge and experience you have openly shared.
