Devereux adoptive mom recognized for her commitment to foster children
Devereux foster and adoptive mom, Terria Hanford, was recently awarded the CCIA Angels in Adoption Award. Terria truly demonstrates the love, perserverance, patience, and selflessness it requires to become an adoptive parent. We’re honored to share her story with you!
When most twenty somethings are busy with friends and planning their careers, at age 20, Terria Hanford was navigating the adoption process. One of her very own family members had a baby girl they were unable to care for and were looking at adoption as a solution. Terria could not accept that her own relative would be placed with a stranger so she made the decision to adopt the child.
Motherhood suited Terria. She made sure she put her daughter’s needs above her own and offered a nurturing and loving home for the child she loved so much while also pursuing a bachelor’s and several master’s degrees. However, as the little baby girl turned into a young woman, Terria’s adopted daughter began hanging around the wrong crowd and became addicted to drugs in her late teens. Terria did not approve of her daughter’s lifestyle and asked her to move out when she turned 18. While abusing drugs, her daughter became pregnant. Despite all of her daughter’s choices, Terria continued to extend a helping hand and insisted on prenatal care for the unborn baby.Because her daughter continued to use drugs while pregnant, Terria’s grandson was born with substance exposure and remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for two weeks after his birth. During this same time, another relative gave birth to a substance exposed baby. In both cases, the babies were removed from their biological parents’ care and placed with Terria.
Although Terria was unprepared to take in two infants, she knew in her heart it was meant to be. She began advocating for her new babies and began the difficult road of finding services for the substance exposed infants who were now in her care. In October of 2015, Terria officially became the adoptive mother to a beautiful baby boy and baby girl. She was estatic!
Shortly after the adoption, Terria received news that her daughter had given birth to a second child who was also suffering from substance exposure. Without hesitation, Terria welcomed her second grandson as a foster placement to ensure the siblings remained together. Even though Terria hopes her daughter will be able to become drug free and be reunited with her son, this Angel is willing to step up again and adopt for the fourth time.
Terria considers each child as if they were her own. She is very involved in all areas of the children’s lives and encourages them to love one another and be respectful of others. The three siblings play together, laugh together, and even fight with one another, but in the end, they all know they are part of a loving family, and that is what truly matters. Terria is truly an “Angel in Adoption”.
